For Immediate Release
Caribbean Writers Series Workshop
Summer 2021

DATES:  July 2021 (10th, 17th, 24th, 31st)
11:00 am – 1:00 pm ET (NYC)
8:00 am –  10:00 am PT.

To provide additional educational opportunities for Students of the African Diaspora and/or Caribbean heritage during this global pandemic, we are inviting up to 20 High School level students to participate in a virtual Reading & Writing Enrichment Workshop during the month of July 2021. During this workshop, attendees will delve into the coming-of-age novel, “Green Days by the River,” by Trinidadian author Michael Anthony through guided group discussions, written pieces and optional oral presentations.  Each student will create a writing sample for their portfolio that will meet the CommonApp requirements for college admission applications (250 – 650 words).  This virtual workshop is designed to practice and improve literacy skills while sharing in an interactive, social and cultural enrichment activity with other peer-aged students throughout the African Diaspora.

Caribbean Writer Series Summer 2021 Workshop Schedule

Student participants will join the Live Workshop sessions via ZOOM, every Saturday in  July 2021 (10th, 17th, 24th, 31st) at 11:00 am – 1:00 pm EDT (NYC) / 8:00 am –  10:00 am PT. A great deal of preparation goes into every session. For this reason, we can only accept students who are willing to commit themselves to attend every session. NO ABSENCES PERMITTED.

A Google classroom will also be established to provide additional student support and share classroom materials and instructions.  Complimentary class materials (kindle book) will be provided to each chosen participant, courtesy of our generous sponsors:  Reggae Reflection (https://www.reggaereflection.com – MA), BlackInk360MUZIKGroup (https://www.instagram.com/reggaetourlife1/), Caribbean One TV Network (https://www.caribbeanonetv.com) and the 501C nonprofit organization, Caring Hub (http://www.caringhub.org – GA).

Natalie Granado, BS, MAT, a Colby College graduate and current NYC high school teacher of college-bound seniors enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, has graciously volunteered to instruct the workshop. She also teaches a writing course at the Arthur Ashe Institute of Urban Health in New York. Additional support and assistance will be provided by graduate level editors and co-instructors.
