The new release Officer Riddim is co-produced by BDLabs Music and LifeForce Production. The tight groove of Officer Riddim, a dubby style modern roots riddim creates the backdrop for a strong message.
The ten track riddim album features several well known conscious singers and lyricists from Jamaica including Papa Biggy, Mykal Rose, Lutan Fyah, Luciano, Louie Culture along with several upcoming New England based Caribbean Reggae artists including King Mas, Mighty Mystic, Atterny, King-i , Jahriffe, and a special dub version accented by the vocals of Mykal Rose.
The inspiration for the Officer Riddim comes from Papa Biggy on the title track, “Officer.” The song’s message relates to the epidemic of violence in the inner cities and increased police brutality in Jamaica at the hands of rogue members of the police force who have forgotten where they came from. Not only does this issue affect Jamaica, but the trend of violent incidents has been reported globally, especially in urban settings. When Papa Biggy heard the riddim, it was perfect for the song he had in mind. Together with Mykal Rose, they voiced the lead song telling this poignant story which sets the stage for the Officer Riddim.
Youths do not always follow the right path and Luciano’s song “Too Late” addresses that best. “Too Late” portrays a young man raised by a hard working single mother who did her best to guide her son. Despite his best upbringing, he followed the wrong path and now he faces the consequences of his criminal ways. It’s too late, not even his mother can help him now.
Olel’ Ganga Lee, Louie Culture lends his raspy vocals to the riddim with a new Ganja anthem, “Kush” encouraging hard work to be successful.
Several songs on the riddim speak about the pattern of corruption within the system. Lutan Fyah’s song, “Dem A Come” refers to the escalating violence within the communities. “Chase Vampire” by King Mas deals with themes of rebellion against oppression while Mighty Mystic’s response is clearly heard that “Only the Strong” will survive in Babylon.
Atterny’s song “Rough and Tuff” highlights those that find themselves with nowhere to turn. It also poses the important question, where are the politicians after the election?
However dire the situation, hope is ever present. King-i’s song “Jah Take Me” encourages to overlook adversity and look within for answers while trusting in Jah to take you through the storm.
Jahriffe’s song “Better Way” adds more encouragement to pursue education and follow dreams for a Better Day.
The album artwork portraying a crime scene was created by artist Stephen “Thunder” Holness, brother of reggae artist, Mighty Mystic (Kevin Holness).
