Steel Pulse Bio:
Steel Pulse signed their first record contract in 1978 with Island Records to produce their breakthrough album, “Handsworth Revolution.” The same year, the British reggae band embarked on a tour with one of their biggest influences, Bob Marley, who often referred to them as the “young Wailers.”
Building on Bob Marley’s tradition of mixing Jamaica reggae with blues and soul from the African Diaspora and socially conscious lyrics, Steel Pulse remains one of reggae’s most prolific, respected and in-demand touring and recording acts.
Original members Hinds and Selwyn “Bumbo” Brown (keyboards, vocals, melodica) formed Steel Pulse in Birmingham, England in the late seventies. They are descendants of the Windrush generation—working class families who migrated to the UK from Jamaica in search of post World War II job opportunities.
Steel Pulse earned their first Grammy Award for their 1986 album, “Babylon the Bandit.” The band has received several Grammy nominations: including a 2019 recognition in the Best Reggae Album category for “Mass Manipulation.” In 1989, Steel Pulse recorded the buoyant song “Can’t Stand the Heat” for the soundtrack of Spike Lee’s acclaimed film “Do the Right Thing.”
Steel Pulse’s current line up includes: David “Dread” Hinds, (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Selwyn “Bumbo“ Brown (lead vocals, keyboards, melodica), Amlak Tafari (bass), David Elecciri, Jr. (lead guitar), Wayne “C-Sharp” Clarke (drums), Kimberly Dawson (backing vocals), John Avery (sax) Wess Perry (sax) and Baruch Hinds (rap).
